The Institute for Politics and Society cordially invites you to the public debate "20th anniversary of the Czech Republic's accession to NATO".

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Czech Republic’s accession to NATO, the world’s most powerful military alliance. In these two decades, the Czech army has made significant changes, becoming fully professional in 2005. These developments led to a decreased number of soldiers, which in turn set the filling of the army’s numeral capacity as one of the state’s priorities. Over the years, a form of active backup has become a popular response to this challenge. Despite the exchange of Mig for Gripen, a large part of the equipment is still part of the pre-1989 legacy.

Military purchases complicate not only the issue of lack of funds but also the tender process, which was accompanied by number of corruption cases. The Czech Republic also participates in a number of foreign missions in the Baltic region, the Balkan region and in the protection of the Icelandic airspace. Czech deployments also took place in other parts of the world, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Mali.

How could the future of the army look like to attract more soldiers? How to improve the purchase process for the army and ensure modern and good quality equipment for soldiers? And what should be the priority for Czech Republic in its relation to NATO?
